Many jobs need only a small concrete slab: a base for a Jojo tank, a shed or Wendy house, a carport, a generator or a pool pump. They are small, but they still need level ground and the right mix. ConcreteSlab.co.za is a free quote service. You fill in one form and we pass your request to independent concrete contractors and suppliers in your area, who quote you directly. We do not pour or sell concrete ourselves. There is no fee and no obligation.
Common small slabs
A small concrete slab is a base that keeps something level, dry and stable. Most are 75 to 150 mm thick and cover just a few square metres.
- Jojo tanks: a full tank is heavy, so the base must be flat, firm and wider than the tank.
- Sheds and Wendy houses: the slab keeps timber off damp ground and the building square.
- Carports: posts need either footings or a slab thick enough to hold base plates.
- Braai and fire-pit pads, steps and patios: a flat, fireproof base with a slight fall for rain.
- Generators and pool pumps: a firm pad that stays level and keeps equipment off wet soil. With load-shedding, many homes now need one.
Size, thickness and strength
Make the slab larger than the object on it, usually by 150 to 300 mm on each side. A water tank is the heaviest item on this list. One litre of water weighs one kilogram, so a 5,000 litre tank weighs five tonnes when full. For tank stands, ask the tank supplier for the base size and thickness they recommend.
A 100 mm slab in 20 to 25 MPa concrete, with light mesh such as Ref 193 to SANS 1024, suits most sheds and pump pads. Heavy tanks and carports with posts need more. The concrete should meet SANS 878, and the cement should be CEM II 42.5N to SANS 50197-1.
Site preparation and small-load realities
Strip the topsoil, level the area and compact the ground. On expansive clay, a slab on loose or wet soil will crack and tilt. A bed of compacted sand or gravel helps.
For a pour of one or two m³, you can mix on site or order ready-mix. Ready-mix trucks carry about 6 m³, and many plants have a minimum load, so a small order may pay a part-load charge. Some suppliers offer small-load or bagged options. Rural sites face long delivery distances, so group jobs where you can. Remember the council and the NHBRC do not usually need plans for tiny pads, but a shed near a boundary may.
What affects your quote
We never give prices here. Small jobs can cost more per m³ than large ones, which surprises many people. Contractors will look at:
- The slab size, thickness and the volume in m³.
- Ground preparation and shuttering.
- Mesh, and the concrete strength.
- Ready-mix or site-mixed concrete.
- Part-load charges and the delivery distance.
- Access for a truck, or the barrow run from the road.
Give the exact size and what will stand on the slab.
Comparing quotes for small concrete slabs
The lowest figure is not always the best deal. When your quotes arrive, check:
- Specification: the thickness, the concrete strength in MPa, the steel and the membrane, so every quote is for the same work.
- Preparation: excavation, sub-base compaction, shuttering and who removes spoil and rubble.
- Concrete and access: ready-mix or site-mixed, whether a pump is included and any part-load or waiting charges.
- Finish, curing and guarantee: the surface finish, how long it will be cured, where joints are cut and what guarantee covers the work.
What to include in your request
- Give the slab length, width and thickness.
- Say what will stand on it, and how heavy it is.
- Describe the ground: slope, clay, sand or fill.
- State whether you want ready-mix or site-mixed concrete.
- Mention your town and the access from the road.
