Epoxy on a concrete floor gives a hard, sealed, wipe-clean surface that resists oil, chemicals and wear. It suits garages, workshops, kitchens, showrooms and factories. ConcreteSlab.co.za is a free quote service. You fill in one form and we pass your request to independent epoxy coating contractors in your area, who quote you directly. We do not mix or apply coatings ourselves. There is no fee and no obligation.

What an epoxy floor coating is

Epoxy is a two-part resin. A base and a hardener are mixed on site and applied while still workable. They cure into a tough plastic skin that bonds to the concrete. It is not the same as concrete floor paint, which is a thin single-pack coating and wears faster.

The main systems are:

  • Thin-film coating: one or two coats, a fraction of a millimetre thick. Good for garages and light traffic.
  • Self-levelling epoxy: a thicker, smooth, glossy layer of 1 to 3 mm for workshops, kitchens and showrooms.
  • Flake or quartz systems: broadcast chips or sand give colour and grip.

Preparation decides how long it lasts

Epoxy only lasts if it bonds. Most failures, such as peeling, bubbling and patches lifting, come from poor preparation or a damp slab.

  • Surface profile: the slab is diamond ground or shot blasted so the resin can grip. Acid etching is less reliable.
  • Cleaning: oil, grease, old paint and curing compounds must be removed.
  • Moisture: a slab laid without a damp-proof membrane (SANS 952) can push moisture up and lift the coating. Ask for a moisture test.
  • Age: a new slab should cure for several weeks before coating.
  • Cracks and joints: these are repaired first, and moving joints are left flexible.

Choosing a finish

Think about how the floor will be used. A glossy epoxy floor can be slippery when wet, so for ramps, wash-down areas and entrances ask for an anti-slip aggregate in the final coat.

Standard epoxy can chalk and fade in direct sun. Where light reaches the floor, a UV-stable polyurethane topcoat helps. Food areas and clean rooms may need specific hygiene-grade systems, and workshops with heavy forklifts need a thicker build. Tell the contractor about chemicals, heat, hot tyres and washing routines.

What affects your quote

People often ask for the price per square metre, but we never give prices here. Contractors will look at:

  • The floor area and the system: thin-film, self-levelling or flake.
  • The slab condition and how much grinding and repair it needs.
  • Colour, gloss level and anti-slip requirements.
  • Downtime allowed, as floors need time to cure before use.
  • Access, power for grinders and travel distance.

Comparing quotes for epoxy floor coatings

The lowest figure is not always the best deal. When your quotes arrive, check:

  • Specification: the thickness, the concrete strength in MPa, the steel and the membrane, so every quote is for the same work.
  • Preparation: excavation, sub-base compaction, shuttering and who removes spoil and rubble.
  • Concrete and access: ready-mix or site-mixed, whether a pump is included and any part-load or waiting charges.
  • Finish, curing and guarantee: the surface finish, how long it will be cured, where joints are cut and what guarantee covers the work.

What to include in your request

  • Give the floor area in square metres.
  • Describe how the floor is used: cars, forklifts, food or foot traffic.
  • Say how old the slab is and mention oil stains or old paint.
  • Name the colour, gloss and anti-slip requirements.
  • Mention your town, access and how long the area can be closed.

Frequently asked questions

Does ConcreteSlab.co.za apply epoxy floors?
No. ConcreteSlab.co.za is a free quote service. You send one request and we pass it to independent epoxy coating contractors near you. They contact you directly with a quote. We do not mix or apply coatings, and there is no obligation.
Can I put epoxy on an old concrete floor?
Usually yes, if the slab is sound and dry. The floor must be ground or blasted, cleaned of oil and old paint, and repaired. A damp or crumbling slab will cause the coating to fail, so ask the contractor to test for moisture first.
How long before I can use an epoxy floor?
Foot traffic is often possible after a day, but heavy traffic, vehicles and chemicals need longer for a full cure. The time depends on the product, thickness and temperature. Your contractor will give you a plan, so schedule the work when the area can stay clear.
How do I find epoxy flooring contractors near me?
Tell us your town, the floor area and how the floor is used, and coating contractors who serve your area will reply. Ask each one about preparation, the system and thickness, and the warranty. Compare what is included, not only the total.
