From a patio to a driveway, concrete pavers give a hard-wearing surface that can be lifted and relaid if services need repair. ConcreteSlab.co.za is a free quote service. You fill in one form and we pass your request to independent paver manufacturers, builders' merchants and paving contractors in your area, who quote you directly. We do not make, sell, deliver or lay pavers ourselves. There is no fee and no obligation, and you can compare suppliers before you decide.
Types of concrete pavers and slabs
Concrete pavers are machine-pressed or cast units that lock together on a bed of sand. The common types are:
- Interlocking pavers: shaped bricks that lock in patterns such as herringbone.
- Paving slabs: larger flat units for paths and patios.
- Stepping stones: single units set in lawn or gravel.
- Cobbles and textured units: for a more rustic look.
Pavers come in grey, charcoal, terracotta and other colours. Remember that colour can fade over years in strong sun.
Where pavers work best
Pavers suit patios, walkways, driveways, pool surrounds and courtyards. For a driveway, choose a thicker paver rated for vehicles. Thin slabs made for a patio can crack under a bakkie or delivery truck.
Pavers also work well where the ground moves a little, such as on expansive clays, because small joints can flex where a rigid slab would crack. On slopes, ask the contractor how the edges will be held. Along a driveway or pool, edge restraints stop the pavers spreading.
Base, bedding and laying
Most paving failures come from poor preparation, not the pavers. A sound job has four layers:
- Subgrade: soft or organic soil removed, then compacted.
- Sub-base: crushed stone or G5 gravel, compacted in layers.
- Bedding: a screeded layer of coarse sand, usually about 25 to 30 mm.
- Joints: fine sand brushed in, then the area compacted again.
Water must drain away from the house, so the contractor sets a slight fall. Tree roots and poor drainage near walls are the usual trouble spots. Ask about sealing if you want a richer colour or easier cleaning.
What affects your quote
People search for slab paver prices, but cost depends on the job. We never give prices here. Suppliers and contractors will look at:
- The area in square metres and the paver type and thickness.
- Colour, pattern and any borders or features.
- Excavation, sub-base depth and rubble removal.
- Edge restraints, steps and drainage.
- Delivery distance, pallet offloading and supply only versus laid.
Photos and a rough sketch of the area help you get quotes you can compare.
Comparing concrete pavers quotes
Concrete products are priced on the detail, so compare like with like. When quotes arrive, check:
- Exact product: the strength class, size, grade or reference number, and that it meets the relevant SANS standard.
- Quantity and minimums: the unit (m³, m², sheets, bags or panels), any minimum order and part-load charges.
- Delivery: the delivery fee, the truck size, offloading and whether the site can take the truck.
- VAT and validity: whether VAT is included, how long the price holds and the lead time.
What to include in your request
- Give the area to be paved in square metres, or the length and width.
- Say whether it is for foot traffic or vehicles.
- Mention the colour and pattern you prefer.
- Describe the ground: slope, existing slab, grass or old paving.
- Name your town and whether a truck can reach the site.
