A concrete driveway is a good long-term choice for a South African home. It handles cars, bakkies and the occasional delivery truck, and it needs little upkeep. ConcreteSlab.co.za is a free quote service. You fill in one form and we pass your request to independent concrete contractors and ready-mix suppliers in your area, who quote you directly. We do not pour, sell or deliver concrete ourselves. There is no fee and no obligation, so you can compare several quotes for your concrete driveway.
Thickness, strength and reinforcement
A driveway for cars is normally 100 mm thick. Where bakkies, vans or delivery trucks will drive, make it 125 to 150 mm. Heavier use calls for more, and an engineer can size it.
- Concrete: 25 MPa is common for homes, and 30 MPa suits heavier use. Ready-mix follows SANS 878.
- Mesh: Ref 193 or Ref 245 to SANS 1024 helps hold cracks tight.
- Base: compacted gravel or crusher run, 100 to 150 mm, under the slab.
Weak, wet or clay subgrade is the main cause of driveway failure, so prepare it well.
Joints, falls and finishes
Concrete moves with heat and drying. Control joints, cut or formed every few metres, tell the slab where to crack. Isolation joints at walls and gates let the slab move without damage.
A driveway needs a fall of around 1 in 50 to 1 in 100 so rain runs off. Steep driveways on sloping Johannesburg or Cape Town plots may need a rougher finish for grip. A broomed finish is the usual non-slip choice. Other finishes include exposed aggregate, stamped patterns and colour hardeners. Stamped and coloured work needs a skilled crew, so ask to see past jobs. Seal the surface if you want an easier clean.
South African site conditions
Frost on the Highveld can scale the surface of weak concrete, so use a proper mix and avoid pouring just before a cold night. In coastal areas, salt air attacks mesh, so keep it well covered with concrete.
Trees are a concern. Roots lift and crack slabs, so cut roots or plan joints around them. Check that your municipality allows the crossover at the kerb, and whether you need approval. Plan for the days without use, because a driveway needs about a week before cars can drive on it. Pump hire may be needed where trucks cannot back in or the driveway is long.
What affects your quote
We never give prices here. People ask about the cost of a new concrete driveway, but it depends on the site. Contractors will look at:
- The driveway area in m², and the thickness.
- Breaking out and removing an old surface.
- Ground preparation, base layer and mesh.
- The finish: broom, exposed aggregate, stamped or coloured.
- Edge shutters, joints and drainage.
- Truck access, any pump, and part-load charges.
Send the length, width and slope, with photos if you can.
Comparing quotes for concrete driveways
The lowest figure is not always the best deal. When your quotes arrive, check:
- Specification: the thickness, the concrete strength in MPa, the steel and the membrane, so every quote is for the same work.
- Preparation: excavation, sub-base compaction, shuttering and who removes spoil and rubble.
- Concrete and access: ready-mix or site-mixed, whether a pump is included and any part-load or waiting charges.
- Finish, curing and guarantee: the surface finish, how long it will be cured, where joints are cut and what guarantee covers the work.
What to include in your request
- Give the driveway length, width and slope.
- Say what vehicles will use it.
- Name the finish you prefer.
- Note whether an old surface must be broken out.
- Share photos and your town, plus truck access.
