Some pours are too far, too high or too awkward for barrows. That is when a concrete pump earns its place. ConcreteSlab.co.za is a free quote service. You fill in one form and we pass your request to independent pump operators and ready-mix suppliers in your area, who quote you directly. We do not own pumps, supply concrete or run pours ourselves. There is no fee and no obligation, and you can compare operators before you book.

Boom pumps and line pumps

A concrete pump moves wet concrete through a pipe or hose so it can reach where a truck chute cannot. There are two main types.

  • Boom pump: mounted on a truck, with a folding arm that places concrete at the end of a hose. It suits suspended slabs, roof slabs and large floors, and it sets up quickly.
  • Line pump: a smaller trailer pump that pushes concrete through a ground-level line of pipe and hose. It suits backyards, narrow access and small to medium pours.

Your operator will advise which fits the site, the height and the volume.

When you need a pump

Pump hire is worth asking about whenever concrete must travel a long way or up a level.

  • Rib-and-block and suspended slabs, where concrete goes up to the first floor.
  • Sites where a truck cannot get close, such as a backyard room or granny flat.
  • Large floors that need steady placing to finish before the concrete stiffens.
  • Basements, retaining walls and columns.

A pump also speeds up a pour and saves your crew from hours of barrowing. Pumped concrete needs a more workable mix, so tell your ready-mix supplier you are pumping.

Preparing the site for a pump

A pump truck is heavy and needs firm, level ground for its outriggers. Check overhead power lines before the day, because a boom must keep a safe distance from them. Leave room for the pump and the ready-mix trucks to queue and turn. The pump needs a clean-out point where the washout can drain away from your neighbours and from stormwater drains.

Have your reinforcement checked, shuttering braced and your crew in place before the first load arrives. A pump places concrete fast, and a weak shutter can fail. Plan your trucks so the pump never runs dry.

What affects your quote

People search for concrete pump hire prices, but each pour is different. We never give prices here. Operators will look at:

  • The type of pump, the reach and the height of the pour.
  • The volume to be pumped and how long the pour will take.
  • Travel distance to your site, often a big factor outside cities.
  • Minimum hire periods and charges for waiting time.
  • Extra hose or pipe, and who supplies the concrete.

Clear details give you quotes you can compare.

Comparing concrete pump hire quotes

Concrete products are priced on the detail, so compare like with like. When quotes arrive, check:

  • Exact product: the strength class, size, grade or reference number, and that it meets the relevant SANS standard.
  • Quantity and minimums: the unit (m³, m², sheets, bags or panels), any minimum order and part-load charges.
  • Delivery: the delivery fee, the truck size, offloading and whether the site can take the truck.
  • VAT and validity: whether VAT is included, how long the price holds and the lead time.

What to include in your request

  • Site address and access for a pump truck
  • Volume of concrete and the pour height
  • Distance from pump position to the pour
  • Date and start time of the pour
  • Overhead lines or other obstructions

Frequently asked questions

Does ConcreteSlab.co.za hire out concrete pumps?
No. ConcreteSlab.co.za is a free quote service. You send one request and we pass it to independent pump operators and suppliers near you. They contact you directly with a quote. We do not own or operate pumps. There is no fee and no obligation.
Do I need a pump for a house slab?
Not always. A ground-floor slab with truck access can be poured from the chute. A pump helps when the truck cannot reach, or for a first-floor or roof slab. Your engineer or contractor can advise.
Does the pump come with the concrete?
Usually they are booked separately, though some ready-mix suppliers offer both. Check that the mix is suitable for pumping and that truck and pump times match, so the pump is never waiting.
How much notice does a pump need?
Pump trucks are busy, especially on weekdays and in the building season. Book as early as you can and confirm the date with your concrete supplier. Give the operator your site address and access details.
