A precast concrete slab is cast and cured at a factory, then delivered and lifted into place. That means a consistent finish, shorter site time and less shuttering. Precast slabs suit floors, roofs, covers, stoeps, steps and many small structures. ConcreteSlab.co.za is a free quote service. You fill in one form and we pass your request to independent precast manufacturers and suppliers in your area, who quote you directly. We do not make, sell, deliver or lift slabs ourselves. There is no fee and no obligation.
What precast slabs are and why people choose them
A precast slab is cast in a mould under controlled conditions. The concrete is vibrated, reinforced and cured at the factory, so quality is more even than concrete poured and cured in the open. Once it has reached strength, it is trucked to site.
The big advantage is time. There is no waiting for formwork, pouring and curing on site, and the slab can often be used soon after it is placed. Precast also works well where a ready-mix truck or pump cannot reach, or where weather would make a site pour risky.
The trade-off is lifting. Heavy slabs need a crane, a hiab or a loader, and the delivery truck needs access.
Common types and uses
Precast covers a wide range of products. Ask the maker which they offer in your area.
- Floor and roof planks: solid, ribbed or hollow-core elements that span between walls or beams.
- Cover slabs: for manholes, drains, septic tanks and trenches, sometimes rated for vehicles.
- Stoep, step and patio slabs: flat units for paths and entrances.
- Lintels and beams: reinforced precast units over doors and windows.
- Special shapes: made to your drawing, such as a tank lid or plinth.
Design, lifting and installation
Any precast slab that carries a floor or roof load must be designed by an engineer to SANS 10100-1, and the bearing on walls or beams must be right. Slab strength is normally 30 MPa or higher, and reinforcing follows SANS 920 for bars and SANS 1024 for mesh.
- Weight: ask for the mass of each slab so you can choose the right crane.
- Lifting points: use the cast-in lifting loops and never improvise.
- Bedding: seat slabs on a level mortar bed or the specified bearing strip.
- Joints: grout or topping joins slabs so they act together.
Plan the crane position and the truck route before delivery day.
What affects your quote
People search for the precast concrete slab price list, but a price depends on the job. We never give prices here. Makers and suppliers will look at:
- The size, thickness, strength and number of slabs.
- Standard or made-to-order moulds.
- Reinforcing, lifting loops and any cast-in fixings.
- Delivery distance and the cost of offloading with a crane.
- Lead time, which is longer for special sizes.
A simple drawing with sizes helps suppliers quote accurately.
Comparing precast concrete slabs quotes
Concrete products are priced on the detail, so compare like with like. When quotes arrive, check:
- Exact product: the strength class, size, grade or reference number, and that it meets the relevant SANS standard.
- Quantity and minimums: the unit (m³, m², sheets, bags or panels), any minimum order and part-load charges.
- Delivery: the delivery fee, the truck size, offloading and whether the site can take the truck.
- VAT and validity: whether VAT is included, how long the price holds and the lead time.
What to include in your request
- List the sizes and quantity of slabs you need.
- Say what each slab is for and the load it will carry.
- Attach the engineer's drawing if one exists.
- Describe site access for a truck and a crane.
- Add your town and the date you need delivery.
