A good job in concrete depends on the people doing it, so finding the right concrete contractors matters. ConcreteSlab.co.za is a free quote service. You fill in one form and we pass your request to independent concrete contractors, builders and specialist finishing teams in your area, who quote you directly. We do not pour, finish, supply or install anything ourselves. There is no fee and no obligation, and you can compare contractors before you decide.

What concrete contractors do

Concrete contractors prepare, pour and finish concrete work. Some handle everything from excavation to the final finish. Others specialise in one trade, such as floors, paving or repairs.

  • Slabs and foundations: house slabs, footings and surface beds.
  • Floors and driveways: floated, brushed or polished finishes.
  • Small works: tank stands, pump pads and shed bases.
  • Repairs and cutting: crack repair, coring and slab removal.

Work that carries load, such as suspended and rib-and-block slabs, needs an engineer's design. A good contractor builds to that design and does not change it on site.

How to choose between contractors

A quote is only part of the picture. When contractors reply, ask them:

  • For photos or references from similar jobs.
  • Who supplies the concrete: ready-mix to SANS 878, or mixed on site.
  • What reinforcement, DPM and formwork the price includes.
  • How curing is handled, especially in hot or windy weather.
  • Whether they carry insurance and who is on site each day.

For a new home, your builder must meet NHBRC requirements and local building rules. For anything structural, ask who signs off the work.

Preparing your site

Good preparation saves time and money. Mark out the area, clear access for a ready-mix truck, and tell contractors about steep slopes or tight gates. A pump may be needed where the truck cannot reach.

Know your ground. Expansive clays in parts of Gauteng, collapsible sands and dolomite can all change how a slab is designed. Coastal sites need better cover to reinforcement because of chlorides. On the Highveld, frost can damage fresh concrete poured on a cold morning.

Power for tools matters too. If load-shedding is likely, agree who supplies a generator.

What affects your quote

People search for concrete contractors near me and pouring costs, but each job differs. We never give prices here. Contractors will look at:

  • The size, thickness and strength of the concrete, in m³ and MPa.
  • Excavation, shuttering, mesh or rebar, and the finish required.
  • Truck access, pump hire and minimum loads or part-load charges.
  • Travel distance, which can be large in rural areas.
  • Labour only, or labour and materials.

Send clear sizes and photos for a quote you can compare fairly.

Comparing quotes for concrete contractors

The lowest figure is not always the best deal. When your quotes arrive, check:

  • Specification: the thickness, the concrete strength in MPa, the steel and the membrane, so every quote is for the same work.
  • Preparation: excavation, sub-base compaction, shuttering and who removes spoil and rubble.
  • Concrete and access: ready-mix or site-mixed, whether a pump is included and any part-load or waiting charges.
  • Finish, curing and guarantee: the surface finish, how long it will be cured, where joints are cut and what guarantee covers the work.

What to include in your request

  • Describe the job and give the size in metres.
  • Say whether you have plans or an engineer's drawing.
  • Mention how a ready-mix truck or pump can reach the site.
  • State when you want to start and any deadlines.
  • Name your town and whether you want labour only or materials too.

Frequently asked questions

Does ConcreteSlab.co.za pour concrete or employ contractors?
No. ConcreteSlab.co.za is a free quote service. You send one request and we pass it to independent concrete contractors and builders near you. They contact you directly with a quote. We do not pour, supply or install anything, and there is no obligation.
Do I need an engineer for my concrete job?
For ground slabs and small pads, a contractor can often work from standard details. Suspended slabs, rib-and-block floors and anything carrying heavy loads need an engineer's design. If you build a new home, your plans and the NHBRC process will say what is required.
Should the contractor supply the concrete?
You can ask for labour only, or labour and materials. Many contractors order ready-mix, which is delivered by truck, usually about 6 m³ at a time. Smaller jobs may use site-mixed concrete. Ask each contractor which they plan to use and why.
How do I find concrete contractors near me?
Tell us your town and describe the job, and contractors who serve your area will reply. In rural areas fewer teams travel, so distance may affect the quote. Compare references, what is included and when they can start before you choose.
